Michigan women and the whooping cough vaccine

Abstract Dr. Pearl Kendrick (1890-1980) and Dr. Grace Eldering (1901-1988) are credited with the development of a vaccine for whooping cough. Mouw family papers

Abstract

The William Mouw family lived in Grand Rapids, Michigan in the early 1900s. The family included three sons: Andrew, John and Cornelius. The family papers relate primarily to the son's involvement in World War I and to Andrew's work with youth and newsboys bands, such as the Grand Rapids News Jackies and the Drum & Bugle Corp. Also included is documentation of College M. Mouw (daughter of Andrew) as editor on the staff of the Wayne University College of Medicine.

The Munro Family papers contain genealogical data, historical correspondence and images, and other historical documents, spanning the dates from 1812 to 1952. Family names represented include: Bill, Burling, Calkins, Clark, Courtright, Madden, Munro, and Ringle. The Needlework Guild of America collected and distributed clothing through charitable agencies. The Grand Rapids Branch was organized in 1921 and disbanded in 1968. This collection includes the club's minutes for most years, membership lists, reports, correspondence and a substantial group of newspaper clippings from a scrapbook.

The Norma L. Gillette collection contains newspaper clippings and photographs, circa 1946-1949, of the Grand Rapids Chicks, a team in the All American Girl Professional Baseball League. Old Third Michigan Association collection

The Old Third Michigan Association was a veteran's reunion group for the Third Michigan Infantry, which served in the Civil War. This collection contains original documents relating to the association and their annual reunions, including minutes, constitutions, a treasurer's book and correspondence. Also included in the collection are a regimental roster, a few photographs of men who served and reference materials compiled for the study of the Old Third Michigan Association.

On the Town is a free publication highlighting arts and entertainment in the Greater Grand Rapids area. It began in 1982 as Downtown magazine, changed its name in 1984 to On the Town, and is now part of the MLive Media Group. Donated by Joanne N. Bailey, former editor of On the Town magazine, this collection of negatives and contact sheets were produced in the 1980s for On the Town.
