Scope and Contents

The collection contains extensive genealogical information, legal documents, newspaper clippings, and other materials dealing with family histories. The bulk of the data deals with the Burling, Munro (Munroe), and Ringle families.

Of interest are the school records of Francis E. and Annette Burling and Gertrude Munro. There is also a collection of poems written by Orville V. Monroe. Included are the estate papers of Sands Burling and Harvey Bolt Munroe, birth certificates of George and Gertrude Monroe, and Harvey B. Munroes Survivors Pension from the War of 1812 (dated probably sometime later).

A smaller part of the collection deals with the Andersons, the Bills, the Bolts, the Calkins, the Clarks, the Courtrights, the Havens, the Maddens, the Sands, the Springsteads, and the Wolvertons.

The collection also includes a number of family photographs, some of which show the following people: Francis, Harvey, Martha, and George Munro; Burr, Cora, Frances, Harriet, Sands, Sarah, Seymour, and Walter Burling. There is also a great deal of correspondence, some dating back to the 1840s, describing daily life.

Biographical / Historical

The biographical information is organized by family surname.

Walter Burling(1776-1825 or 1847), a prominent ship builder, carried on a large business at various points along the Hudson River. Burling married Patience Ann Havens and the couple had seven or eight children.

William Munro, husband of Elizabeth Bolt, lived on Long Island in 1794.

Mathias Ringle (1742-1811), born in Pennsylvania was a Revolutionary War soldier in the Ensign, 3rd division, 1st Battalion of Militia in the County of North Hampton, PA. Mathias married twice, first to Nancy Loveuguier, and next to Julia Ann Pohr.

Abstract

The Munro Family papers contain genealogical data, historical correspondence and images, and other historical documents, spanning the dates from 1812 to 1952. Family names represented include: Bill, Burling, Calkins, Clark, Courtright, Madden, Munro, and Ringle. The collection also includes a number of family photographs and a great deal of correspondence, dating back to the 1840s.
