Abstract

This devised collection includes historical published travel literature for Michigan in general and for specific areas and cities in Michigan. The bulk of the material relates to tourism, but some basic transportation literature is also included. Books, maps and ephemera are the primary formats. Fragile and rare materials are found, as well as an occasional current publication. Commercial publications, as well as unpublished personal travel narratives, are included.

Abstract The Grand Rapids Public Library railroads collection contains various items related to railroading, primarily in Western Michigan, which do not fit in the other collections covering specific railway lines. Included are a wide range of company instruments issued by various railroads from circa 1837-1960, including also interurban and trolley lines. Abstract The Madeline Parker Groff collection documents the vaudeville career of two young physical culture devotees, Maurice Bellclaire and Benjamin Morris and their manager, Fred Paulo Mongeon, who also had his own act. Also documented is the creation, by Maurice Bellclaire and Fred Paulo, of a summer resort on the south shore of Reeds Lake, East Grand Rapids, Michigan, which catered mainly to vaudevillians and theatrical troupes.
