Forming the bulk of this collection are the diaries of Dorothea Sophia Rector Spring, generally known as Dora Spring. She was a Michigan farm woman, recording her daily life from 1867 to 1928 in the documents found here. Also included are letters to her husband, Albert Jared Spring, and other correspondence. Dr. Eugene Shelley Browning (1883-1955) was a physician in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Dr. Browning was the only African American in his 1905 class at the Detroit Medical College. He broke racial barriers by obtaining admitting privileges in Grand Rapids hospitals and is recognized as the pioneer of present day well-baby clinics. Frank Cammeron Kinsey (1877-1931) was a surgeon from Grand Rapids, Michigan, commissioned as a lieutenant in the Medical Reserve Corp when the United States entered World War I, but entering active service as a Captain.
