Tad Shaw collection

Abstract

Tad Shaw was a wholesaler and magazine distributor in Grand Rapids, Michigan from 1922-1959. He owned a book shop located in the Gilbert Building from 1922-1931. Tad was involved in many clubs and organizations in Grand Rapids throughout his life and eventually became president of the Peninsular Club from 1948-1949.

This collection was built by James Goode, a faculty member in the History Department at Grand Valley State University, with the periodic assistance of some of his students. The main contents are select oral histories and the Arab American / Syrian Clipping Index of Grand Rapids Press and Grand Rapids Herald Newspaper Articles. The index was done by students from one of Goode's courses.

The Arleigh C. Hitchcock Homestyle Center collection

Abstract Baxter Laundries Corporation was founded in 1876 by Alfred Baxter in the basement of the haberdashery firm of Gardner & Baxter on Monroe Ave. in Grand Rapids, Mich. Baxter Laundries, which by 1928 had become the largest corporation of its type in the world, owned 30 cleaning plants in 17 states. The Lincoln Republican Club

Abstract The Lincoln Republican Club of Grand Rapids, Michigan was formed in 1892. Made up of Kent County Republican Party workers, the club sought to promote the principles of Republicanism and to interest those in politics who had previously been indifferent. The Michigan Cyclist was published by the Michigan Cyclist Publishing Company, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Devoted to the general interest of the sport and trade, the weekly magazine was directed to the followers of bicycle racing and touring and served as a major instrument of advertising for the various bicycle manufacturing companies. The coverage area consisted primarily of Michigan, Indiana and Ohio.
