St. Cecilia Society collection

Abstract St. Cecilia Music Center (formerly known as St. Cecilia Society) is a non-profit organization that advances the appreciation of music in Grand Rapids, Michigan. St. Cecilia was formed in 1883 and is considered the 'mother of the arts' in Grand Rapids. This is a devised collection which brings together miscellaneous accessions and found items relating to the organization. The bulk of the collection consists of programs and yearbooks. Stegmier family photos and biographical sources

Abstract

The Stegmier (also spelled Stegmeier) family emigrated from Germany to Grand Rapids, Michigan in the 1890s. The collection contains a family history by Jack Stegmier, news clippings regarding Irwin Stegmier and photographs dating circa 1890 to 1910, plus 1980 images of Jack Stegmier. The material provides information on the Stegmier relatives and their lives in America. Photographs include interiors of a tailor shop and saloon during the first two decades of the twentieth century.

Stephen Deming Stover glass negatives

Abstract Stephen Deming Stover was a printer and an amateur photographer in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This collection contains 75 glass plate negatives for images from 1900 through 1906, taken by Stover. They depict various scenes from Grand Rapids and Grand Haven, Mich. and Chicago, IL., including churches, street scenes, people, social events and parades. Abstract The Sterling family papers contain original Civil War era letters, written by soldier Daniel L. Sterling of the 1st Michigan Engineers and Mechanics, Company D; dated January 30 1864-September 18, 1865. Stocking School PTA records

Abstract

This collection contains scrapbooks and meeting minutes of the Stocking School Parent Teacher Association in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The organization was first formed in 1906 as the Mother's Club at Seventh Street School. The scrapbooks include newspaper clippings, photographs and programs. Information covers the school, principals, teachers, students and parents. Some material from the city and state level of the Parent Teachers Association is also included.

Abstract Aaron H. Stolorow (1908-1986) operated automobile parking lots in Grand Rapids, Michigan from the 1930s through the 1980s. He ran the parking lots under both his own name and under Outdoor Parking Co. This collection contains 24 black and white images of parking lots that were owned or leased by Stolorow in Grand Rapids, Muskegon and Detroit. Street Railway Weekly/Trolley Topics collection

Abstract

Street Railway Weekly, later Trolley Topics, was a periodical published by the Grand Rapids Railway Co., a nationally recognized leader in the street railway industry. It was designed for the use of the electric streetcar patrons of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Distributed at no cost, the pamphlet format combined jokes, facts, entertainment news and an editorial espousing the company line. The issues document the impact of the automobile and the bus on the streetcar system.

Stuart Hoffius collection of records

Abstract Judge R. Stuart Hoffius (1914-2005) was one of the key players in bringing the Alexander Calder sculpture La Grande Vitesse to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Swift family diaries

Abstract The Swift family diaries were written by a mother and daughter, Lucy and Genevieve Swift, from 1908-1963. Lucy wrote some, Genevieve wrote others and they both shared space in a third set. The diaries tell about animals in the Swift's yard, the weather, trips to the medical doctor and dentist and their daily routines. Some diaries give lists of garden prices, and others give lists of travel expenses. They talk about the various clubs the Swifts attended and their other forms of recreation....
