Content Description

Most of the material in this collection was generated during the MGC's 1992 seminar. It includes one spiral-bound syllabus and two cases containing 20 audio cassette tapes of presentations. The syllabus is a compilation of presentation handouts, a conference schedule, speaker biographies, a directory of local societies, and a list of registrants, including surnames the registrants were researching. There is also a directory of MGC member institutions and their publications as of 1994.

The Michigan Genealogical Council (MGC) is comprised of genealogy societies and institutions around the state of Michigan. The purpose of the council is to coordinate and promote genealogical activities of its members as well as to advocate for the preservation of Michigan records of value to genealogists. Members of the council share information about regular events and speakers and participate in projects such as records indexing and pioneer settler certificates. MGC regularly hosts educational opportunities such as its annual statewide seminar.

Abstract

The Michigan Genealogical Council (MGC) is comprised of genealogy societies and institutions around the state of Michigan. This collection contains a directory of member societies and their publications as of 1994. In October 1992, MGC hosted its annual seminar in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This collection includes a syllabus and audio cassettes with recordings of presentations given at that seminar. That year the theme was "The Great Crossing to the New World," and the presentations centered around immigration from the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the Netherlands, as well as migration to Michigan from New England and New York.
