Abstract The Camera Shop was formed in 1908 by Walter K. Schmidt (1865-1938) in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to provide photo supplies to the community. Schmidt, a pharmacist by training, used his knowledge of chemicals to run the Camera shop along side his drugstore until 1936. Abstract

Charles Merrill was a Grand Rapids (Mich.) photographer. He worked in partnership with his father, Leonard Merrill, under the name C.L. Merrill and Co. This collection contains 37 original photographs with views of Grand Rapids circa 1887. The views are predominantly downtown scenes and buildings, particularly along Campau Square and Monroe Avenue, including North Monroe (then called Canal Street).

Charles Vandervelde glass negatives and photos collection

Abstract

Charles Vandervelde (1867-1941) was a lifelong resident of Grand Rapids (Mich.) and an amateur photographer. This collection contains 99 items, including several duplicate images, of the greater Grand Rapids area, circa 1895-1905. The images include a unique set of street views from the near northeast side of downtown, a Spanish-American War rally, the flood of 1904 and the water reservoir break. Also included are a few photographs each of Ada, Jenison and Plainfield (Mich.).
