Abstract Richard F. Vander Veen (1922-2006) was a Grand Rapids, Michigan lawyer and politician. He served as the Democractic Congressman from the 5th District of Michigan from 1974 to 1977. Beyond his political activities, Vander Veen was devoted to his family, headed a law firm, was a rare bookman, loved sailing and headed an alternative energy company later in life. Richmond Family Papers

Abstract The Richmond family was one of Grand Rapid's early pioneering families, settling in Western Michigan in the 1830s. The bulk of the collection is the William Almy Richmond (1809-1871) papers, dealing with Indian Affairs, 1845-1849. Richmond was Superintendent of Indian Affairs for Michigan and Wisconsin and in this position made treaty payments to the Indians at La Pointe on Lake Superior. Rix Robinson collection

Abstract

Rix Robinson (1792-1875) was a pioneer and fur trader and is said to be the first White settler to permanently live in the greater Grand Rapids, Michigan area. This is a devised collection of accessions related to Robinson. Included are original documents, such as a family bible, property deeds and letters. Also included is research material frmo an archaeological dig of Robinson's trading post on the Grand River in what is today Ada, Michigan.

Abstract This collection of dairies are mainly those of Robert B. Loomis (1832-1907). Born in Maine, he moved with his family to Boston, Massachusetts at the age of six. He married Emily Goodhue with whom he fathered four children. From 1862 to 1866, he lived in Washington D.C. and then moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan where he ran his own business and was involved in church, civic, and state affairs. This collection includes one scrapbook, containing information on Grand Rapids, Michigan area magicians and the Robert E. Haynes family.
