Census records of Kent County, Michigan

 Collection
Identifier: Collection 531

Scope and Contents

The censuses are original copies of pre-printed forms that were filed with the Kent County clerk. They have been bound into red books. Each volume describes what type of schedule and what location the volume covers.

This collection does not have every schedule for every location in Kent County. For example, it does not include the 1884 population census for Cascade, Courtland, Gaines, Grand Rapids, Gratton and Lowell Townships.

The information that was recorded varied by year, but population schedules included a resident’s name, age, race, profession, and place of birth at minimum. Some censuses later included additional fields, such as relationships to other members of the household, parents’ birthplaces, and education level.

The mortality schedules list deaths that occurred in the previous 12 months, usually between June 1 of the previous year and May 31 of the year they were taken. The 1850 and 1860 mortality schedules pre-date when death registration was required in Michigan, so they can act as a substitute for death records.

The agricultural and industrial schedules provide details of farms, lumbering, and other manufacturing operations. The agricultural censuses generally recorded the landowner, acreage, and the type/value of livestock and produce. Industrial censuses provide the name of the company, raw materials and machinery used, number of employees and wages, and the products produced. Finally, social schedules are divided by city or township and provide general statistics about real estate values, taxes, schools, libraries, newspapers, churches, crime, and wages.

Biographical / Historical

Federal censuses in this collection cover the years 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880. These include population schedules listing residents for every year, and some years include additional schedules. The federal census copies in this collection appear to be local copies that were originally filed with the Kent County clerk. The original copies were sent to the National Archives, and an additional copy was filed at the state level. In theory, the copies in this collection should be exact copies of the National Archives copies that are readily available online to researchers. However, the copies were created by hand so there may be slight differences in information and legibility between the federal copies and these local copies. The 1880 federal census copy in this collection is on abbreviated forms, listing only name, age, sex, and ethnicity. However, they provide an additional listing of the population to compare to the more detailed copy that is held at the National Archives.

State censuses in this collection cover 1884 and 1894. The Michigan state census was taken at irregular intervals between 1827—1845 and then every ten years between 1854—1904. The two most comprehensive censuses were those taken in 1884 and 1894. These censuses are of particular value to genealogists as no fragments of the 1890 federal census in Michigan survive. The state censuses can act as a substitute for gathering family history information in that time period.
