Biographical / Historical

Dr. Mary Jane Dockeray (1927-2020) was a naturalist, lecturer, writer, and educator who lived and worked in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Growing up in the Grand Rapids area, she attended Oakleigh School for eleven years, then Grand Rapids Union High School for eleventh and twelfth grade. She was hired by the Grand Rapids Public Museum (GRPM) as a nature lecturer for local schools in 1949 after graduating from Michigan State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Geology. Dockeray hosted a daily radio program on WGRD from 1955 to 1960 called “Radio Spy,” wherein she spoke about nature subjects in a 15-minute segment. In 1961, she put together a film called “These Things Are Ours,” which featured speakers who lectured for the National Audubon Society (NAS). Mary Jane Dockeray became a speaker for the NAS to present her film to audiences. Dockeray was the pivotal figure in the establishment of the Blandford Nature Center (BNC) of the Grand Rapids Public Museum, where she was Curator-Naturalist from 1968 until 1990. Dockeray was highly involved in education throughout her life. The BNC became well-known for its educational programs. The Blandford Environmental Enrichment Program (BEEP), first hosted in 1973, was developed specifically for gifted students who wanted to remain active in programs throughout the school year. Dockeray remained engaged at the center even after her retirement in 1990, the year she retired. She participated in the committee that selected applicants for the Mary Jane Dockeray scholarship at Grand Valley State University, beginning in the early 1990s. In 2012, Dockeray was admitted to the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame. Her written works include a book called “Let’s Go Exploring,” and her 2014 autobiography, entitled “Rock On, Lady.”
