Scope and Contents

This collection consists of publications in which Glew contributed poems and other writings, and advertisements he created. Additionally there are a few newpaper clippings, biographical in nature, and several books, one which contains Glew’s poetry. Glew contributed poetry to many issues of Powers Periodicals and there is a run of those issues in the collection from 1953-1958.

Biographical / Historical

Francis (Frank) Kinne Glew was born in Muskegon, Michigan to Charles F. Glew and Lorretta (Kinne) Glew in September of 1895. He relocated to Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1920, after a short amateur boxing career and newspaper advertising work with the Muskegon Chronicle. In Grand Rapids he continued to box with the YMCA and worked for an advertising agency. Frank married Mildred O. Sandberg in June of 1924 and, that same year, he opened his own advertising firm. Together, Frank and Mildred had two children, Virginia and Dale.

Glew wrote thousands of essays and poems in his lifetime. Many of them were published in West Michigan newspapers. Frank was a frequent contributor to the Grand Rapids Press’ Public Pulse column. He died in June of 1966 at the age of 70 and is buried at Rest Lawn Memorial Park in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Abstract

Francis (Frank) Kinne Glew was born in Muskegon, Michigan in 1895. He relocated to Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1920 where he opened his own advertising firm a few years later. In his lifetime, Glew wrote thousands of essays and poems. Many of them were published in West Michigan newspapers. He died in Grand Rapids in 1966. This collection consists of publications in which Glew contributed poems and other writings, and advertisements he created. It may be of interest to the researcher who is interested in local poets or the advertising industry in Grand Rapids in the mid 1900s.
