Biographical / Historical

Mary N. (Carpenter) Parris (1852–1947) built the Parris Block at the southwest corner of South Division Avenue and Hall Street in the late-1800s, and there operated the M. N. Parris Dry Goods Store with her husband, Joseph C. Parris (1848–1915). The store was located at 761–763 South Division Avenue (after 1912, numbered 1201–1203 South Division Avenue). Upon the death of her husband in 1915, she carried on the business with the help of her son, Griffin A. Parris (1890–1965), until her retirement in 1931. She died in Grand Rapids in 1947. Her son continued the business until 1954.
