Series V. Trade Literature
Scope and Contents
Baker Furniture Company is a furniture business, known internationally for the high quality of its designs and workmanship, that operated in the West Michigan area from 1890 through 2006. The collection contains legal, financial and business records of the company. Included are documents related to the furniture for sale by the company, photos of products, and price lists. The scrapbooks contain additional information, such as advertising, but also some actual catalogs. Business and legal files include information on subsidiary companies or companies purchased by Baker, such as the Grand Rapids Chair Company and the Manor in New York City. The collection also illuminates various aspects of the operations of a furniture company, generally. As such, this collection is valuable for understanding the furniture market in general, and specifically the operations of a furniture company. The material was received from Hollis M. Baker, the last family owner.
