Scope and Contents
[.1] Has name of Mrs. T.H. Gilbert & sticker for Mrs. J. Langdon McKee on verso. [.2] Verso notes: Gillette(?) Studio (Gillette name partially missing). “Compliments of Isobel Nelson Bla? ... daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Ezra T. Nelson, 1936.” [.3, .4] Two contact prints of the Booth illustration “Campau Trading Post” [.5] Guild House. Early photo reproduction. 5X7, cracked horizontally about a quarter from the top of the board. “Grand Rapids as It Was” label added to verso at later date. [.6] Reproduction with the contemporary “Grand Rapids As It Was” label on the verso. View from Island #1. Wigwam, Guild House (first frame house, 1833), Campau's Fur Storage House. Guild House. Two later photoprints, with Dec. 1, 1921 notes by C.H. On the back. [.7] Verso has later hand drawn illustration of the Grand River, and the street layout at the time of the illustration, with a typed note of the image landmarks and later sites. Campau's warehouse is listed as near the rear of the later Charles Trankla & Co. store. The river is given as up to the corner of Pearl St. & Monroe Ave. [.8] Same image, and with the typed landmark descriptions, but without the map. [.9] Guild House by Turner. Later photo print of his illustration. Turner signature lower right in the image. This version has the Guild House with a canoe in front and Campau Storage building right, with another canoe in front, but the Native American Tepee is missing from this version. . Walkway & pond in foreground with people and horse drawn wagons. Various houses in the background, and a road curving around from center left across the center of the image. Two churches, houses, and other buildings. The two tower just visible center right are probably St. Mark's Church at the end of Pearl St. [.14, .15, .16] 1873 view looking southwest toward Grand River, with several bridges. Numerous buildings on the West side of the river. View looking down hill with sloping ground in the foreground, and a fence at the bottom before the houses start. . Three copy prints of Neg. 98, 771. This folder contains both original photographs and also copy photos, sometimes of the same images as an original, but often copy photo for which the original may not be held, or may be in a different archival collection. Two photographic reproductions on board of the Booth 1831 illustration, showing the Baptist Mission the Native Americans in the foreground, and Campau's trading post (the three buildings center right). Both are labeled with the title “Grand Rapids in 1831”, and have the “Booth” name lower right.
