Barber Shops (1)
Scope and Contents
1. Interior view, July 28, 1906. 2005.051. Believed to be either George W. Payne’s shop at 97 Monroe, suggested by Payne’s presence in the image, or Clarence W. Hazel’s shop at 109 Monroe. The evidence for the later is the 1906 City Directory, which lists D.C. Elliott as being employed by Hazel, not Payne. However, Elliott may have changed positions within the year. DeWitt Clinton Elliott is not listed in the 1907 directory at all, Payne’s establishment is not listed, and Hazel has moved his shop to the Ashton Building. In 1910, Elliott is listed as working for Payne at 91 Monroe near the Morton House at 93 Monroe, with Hazel still in the Ashton Building. L-R in image are: Plez Weekly (African American porter), D.C. Elliott (copied from his family’s original), J.W. Riley, E. Hickman, E.E. Geeck, J.S. Hodgeman, Emmet Grant (African American porter?), G.W. Payne (owner?), E. Barnhardt, Wm. Honicker and Henrietta Sonnema.
